In 1869, four years after the end of the American Civil War, U.S. Army Captain James West and U.S. Marshal Artemus Gordon hunt for Confederate General "Bloody" McGrath, who is responsible for a massacre in West's hometown of New Liberty.

West and Gordon manage to infiltrate Loveless's mobile headquarters, a massive steam-powered train called the Wanderer. They also rescue Rita Escobar, the daughter of one of the kidnapped scientists. Despite their initial friction, West and Gordon begin to work together effectively, using West's physical prowess and Gordon's inventive gadgets. The investigation leads them to Dr. Arlovlov Loveless, a brilliant but insane Confederate scientist who uses a wheelchair due to losing the lower half of his body in the war. Loveless is holding the other scientists captive and is using them to build a massive, steam-powered mechanical spider equipped with heavy weaponry. He plans to use the machine to destroy the United States and divide the country among the great powers of the world, including himself. West and Gordon manage to infiltrate Loveless's mobile

West eventually reaches Loveless, who is strapped into a specialized flying apparatus. After a struggle, West manages to throw Loveless off the spider, and he falls to his death. West and Gordon then rescue the President and destroy the mechanical spider.

At the 20th Golden Raspberry Awards, the film was nominated for eight Razzies, including Worst Picture and Worst Actor for Smith (who lost to Kevin Costner for For Love of the Game and The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc), and it won five: Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Screen Couple (Smith and Kline), and Worst Original Song (for the song "Wild Wild West").
